{in my ear}

Thursday, November 4, 2010

Last night when Eric got home from work I made my big escape.
Grabbed my purse and grocery bags and made a bee-line for the car.
Got in the car and put in Nirvana.
I was in the mood for this and turned it up. Loud.
And then this....louder.
After a long couple days at home with a sick one,
although there is nowhere else I would want to be when one of my kids is sick,
a brief escape is just what I needed.
And music. Loud music.

So many memories and emotions and feelings are tied up in music for me.
Certain people and places and times are brought back to life.
Concerts and tapes and albums...
Cd's and ipods and listening to bands in bars.

Today and all week really, we have been listening to Stevie Nicks, Charlotte and I.
We listen to it in the living room so there is plenty of "dancing room"
for Charlotte to do what she calls her dancing/ballet moves.
Our favorite lately has been Free Fallin'.
I love Tom Petty's version and I love this version just as much, maybe more.
I will never get tired of listening to that song.

*******
And yes, I can go from Nirvana to Patsy Cline to Ryan Adams to Prince
and
Fats Domino to Notorious B.I.G. (wait-did I just admit that?)
to Stevie Nicks and  Fleetwood Mac to Stevie Wonder and Pearl Jam
to Jack Johnson and Black Sabbath, the Rolling Stones and Michael Jackson
to Blind Melon and The Grateful Dead,
Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris and Blondie.
...all in a day.

For me music is relaxing and calming and inspiring and necessary.
Tell me, what is playing in your ear lately?
Old, new, a song, a group, a favorite music-related memory...anything.
I'd love to hear.
But first I think you should go listen to one of your favorite songs or your favorite bands... really loud.

  2. At the moment I'm listening to Madeleine Peroux to calm me... but if I'm in the car (on my own), then it's either Foo Fighters... Kasabian...Oasis (reminding me of my youth in the UK), Chili Peppers (reminds me of my surfing days) or anything that I can just yell along to.. The hubby and I have a huge appreciation of music (he was in a band... pre kiddies)... I think we have lived our lives with a constant soundtrack playing! Lx

  9. i think the list of music i don't like would be shorter. guns n roses- the end. right now though i'm loving the roots, she and him, elizabeth mitchell, feist, ingrid michelson, amos lee, matt costa...just to name a few.

i have to tell you a funny story about stevie nicks- she used to live in az not far from where i lived and a million years ago i worked at bed, bath, and beyond and she came in to get a new bedroom set and i helped her. at the time waterfall (her version of course) was my favorite song so i don't have to tell you that i might have peed my pants just a bit that sunday afternoon.

  10. I didn't marry a drummer in a rock band for nothing.

I have many music memories. Many. The first that comes to mind wouldn't be appropriate to share in the comments section. If you're curious, I'll dish to you.

Good tunes: M. Ward, Jenny & Johnny, Beulah, Guided By Voices, the Shins....and the list goes on forever.

  13. I have a very wide range in music taste as well. And so many songs remind me of certain times in my life...when I was a kid my dad always played and sang Eric Clapton's "Layla" on his guitar, so I always think of him with that song. I just saw Tom Petty in concert a few weeks ago, I have always wanted to see him and he did NOT disappoint. Have you heard John Mayer's version of "Free Fallin"? John Mayer is someone I can always listen to no matter what, never get sick of and know every lyric to every song.

  15. I have never really listened to that much music. My family didn't, so I wasn't used to it. But I have found it very soothing and perhaps distracting lately. I have it on all the time. I hope to be back for coffee next Tuesday...hopefully my life will cooperate :).
